ASIAN UPPER BLEPHAROPLASTY, ASIAN DOUBLE EYELID SURGERY
Asian Upper Blepharoplasty, or Double eyelid surgery, is a specialised surgical procedure that involves the creation of a natural looking crease in the upper eyelid. The surgery can improve the shape and contour of the eyes, provide a brighter and more youthful appearance, and can make the application of makeup easier.

Asian Upper Blepharoplasty, or Double Eyelid Surgical Method
Broadly, the methods can be classified as “closed” or “open” depending on whether a continuous incision is made in creating a supratarsal fold. In reality, there are many variants based on the same surgical principles of creating a connection between the eyelids skin and the underlying structures. Double Eyelid Surgical methods include:
- Open incisional method
- Traditional closed method
- Continuous buried suture
- Partial buried suture method – a variant of the continuous buried suture method
How is the Double Eyelid Surgry Operation Performed
Asian upper eyelid surgery usually takes between 1-2 hours to perform. Typically, it is performed as a day operation under local anaesthesia with or without sedation. Dr Lin generally does not perform Asian upper eyelid surgery under general anaesthesia, as it is important to assess eye opening in all surgery of the upper eyelids. Unlike lower eyelids, movement is an important part of the normal function and aesthetics of the upper eyelids, and should be consistently assessed for appropriate height, shape, and symmetry.
Expectation Of Recovery After Double Eyelid Surgery
As with all surgical procedures, recovery will differ significantly between individual patients. In the first one to two weeks, it is common to have:- Some mild discomfort following the procedure, which is usually well controlled with oral medications.
- Swelling and bruising around the eyelids. For most patients this will improve over one to two weeks, such that may be comfortable to return to work and social activities.
- Dry eyes. This may require the use of lubricating eye drops, especially in patients with a history of existing dry eyes.
Why Do Some People Have A Single Eyelid
There are distinct anatomical differences in the bony and soft tissue structures around the eyelids between Caucasian and Asian patients. These have an important role affecting both the appearance of the eyelids, and how they age. Many Asian patients are born without a supratarsal fold, or may have fold instability, leading to the appearance of multiple folds. These changes typically become more pronounced with age. In addition, many Asian patients have some degree of upper eyelid ptosis, which may be very subtle and may be unnoticed, but may contribute to the appearance of eyelid asymmetry.Recovery After Surgery
As with all surgical procedures, recovery will differ significantly between individual patients.
In the first one to two weeks, it is common to have:
- Some mild discomfort following the procedure, which is usually well controlled with oral medications.
- Swelling and bruising around the eyelids. For most patients this will improve over one to two weeks, such that may be comfortable to return to work and social activities.
- Dry eyes. This may require the use of lubricating eye drops, especially in patients with a history of existing dry eyes.
Most patients usually return to office work after one to two weeks. Light exercise and physical activities can usually resume after 2 weeks. Heavy sporting activity usually need 4-6 weeks of recovery.
The final results will often not be apparent until 6-12 months following surgery. This is the time required for most residual swelling to resolve, and for scars to mature.
