Discover the Effects of Asian Upper Blepharoplasty

Asian double eyelid surgery in Melbourne is a specialised cosmetic procedure designed to create or enhance the upper eyelid fold, a feature often sought after for its aesthetic appeal. Performed by our skilled plastic surgeons, this surgery addresses the unique anatomical characteristics of Asian eyelids.

Achieving harmonious results requires an understanding of the unique anatomical differences within the Asian upper eyelid as well as aesthetic ideals sought after by Asian patients.

What is Asian double eyelid surgery?

Asian double eyelid surgery, often referred to as Asian upper blepharoplasty, is a cosmetic procedure designed to create a distinct upper eyelid crease in individuals of Asian descent who have a single eyelid without a natural fold. This surgical procedure creates and defines the upper eyelid crease, which has the added benefit of elevating or stabilising existing folds.

What are the benefits of double eyelid surgery?

The benefits of Asian double eyelid surgery include creating an upper eyelid fold to re-define the contour of the eyes, elevating eyelid skin which might be redundant or sagging and stabilising multiple or low eyelid creases. In patients where there is excessive upper eyelid skin, it can help to improve the visual field by removing the excess skin and elevating the upper eyelid fold.

In patients with upper eyelid ptosis (weakness of eyelid muscle), it may be possible to address this at the time of the surgery to improve eyelid opening and symmetry.

Am I a good candidate for double eyelid surgery?

Good candidates for double eyelid surgery in Melbourne typically include patients who lack an upper eyelid fold or have unstable folds. In these cases, patients often note the heaviness of the upper eyelid skin or the appearance of eyelid asymmetry. A consultation with one of our specialist plastic surgeons is the best way to determine whether you’re a suitable candidate.

Are there any risks or side effects?

Like any surgical procedure, double eyelid surgery carries risks, such as infection, bleeding, scars and asymmetry. Temporary side effects may include swelling and bruising during the post-operative recovery.

These will be discussed in detail during the preoperative consultations so patients are fully informed on what to expect. Your recovery will be supported at every stage but our dedicated team of doctors, nurses and dermal clinicians.. For more details on surgical risks and recovery please click here.

Double eyelid surgical methods

Broadly, techniques for ADES can be classified as “open” or “closed” depending on whether a continuous incision is made to create a supratarsal fold. In reality, there are many variants based on the same surgical principles of creating a connection between the eyelid's skin and the underlying structures. Double eyelid surgical methods include:

  • Open incisional method
  • Traditional closed method
  • Continuous buried suture
  • Partial buried suture method – a variant of the continuous buried suture method

What to expect when having double eyelid surgery in Melbourne?

Consultation

At your initial consultation, Specialist Plastic Surgeon Dr Frank Lin will provide an individualised assessment of the eyelid position and structure, your suitability for surgery, and also take time to understand your concerns and goals.

We believe excellent and consistent results always begin with a well-informed patient. Your treatment plan will be discussed with you and should provide realistic expectations of what can be achieved, with time to address any questions you may have about the surgery.

Procedure

Asian upper eyelid surgery usually takes between 1-2 hours to perform. Typically, it is performed as a day operation under local anaesthesia with or without sedation. Dr Lin generally does not perform Asian upper eyelid surgery under general anaesthesia, as it is important to assess eye-opening in all surgery of the upper eyelids.

Unlike lower eyelids, movement is an important part of the normal function and aesthetics of the upper eyelids and should be consistently assessed for appropriate height, shape, and symmetry.

Recovery

As with all surgical procedures, recovery will differ significantly between individual patients. In the first one to two weeks, it is common to have:

  • Some mild discomfort following the procedure, which is usually well controlled with oral medications.
  • Swelling and bruising around the eyelids. For most patients, this will improve over one to two weeks, such that it may be comfortable to return to work and social activities.
  • Dry eyes. This may require the use of lubricating eye drops, especially in patients with a history of existing dry eyes.

Most patients usually return to office work after one to two weeks. Light exercise and physical activities can usually resume after 2 weeks. Heavy sporting activity usually needs 4-6 weeks of recovery. The final results will often not be apparent until 6-12 months following surgery. This is the time required for most residual swelling to resolve, and for scars to mature.

FAQs

If you have any more questions about double eyelid surgery in Melbourne, please don’t hesitate to contact us. In the meantime, you can find FAQs below that may provide the additional information you’re looking for.

Why do some people have a single eyelid?

Some individuals, particularly in Asian populations, are born without a supratarsal fold, leading to a single eyelid appearance. Factors like anatomical differences in eyelid structures and subtle upper eyelid ptosis contribute to this, with changes often becoming more pronounced with age.
What is the best age for double eyelid surgery?

Ideal candidates for double eyelid surgery are adults, with younger individuals benefiting if they wish to create or stabilise upper eyelid folds, or to improve symmetry for aesthetic reasons. Older patients often seek eyelid surgery for a combination of problems including skin excess, instability of eyelid fold or upper eyelid ptosis (weakness of the upper eyelid muscle).
How common is Asian eyelid surgery?

Asian eyelid surgery, a form of cosmetic eyelid surgery, is highly popular in Asia and is gaining global recognition. This procedure, which creates an upper eyelid fold, is sought after for its aesthetic enhancement and effective outcomes.
Are the results of double eyelid surgery permanent?

The results from a double eyelid procedure are often long-lasting but may not be permanent. Ageing and changes in skin elasticity can impact the durability of the upper eyelid fold. This natural process of ageing takes place irrespective of whether patients have had eyelid surgery. Particularly in young patients undergoing upper eyelid surgery, it is possible that further surgery will be needed as ageing progresses.
