If you are suffering from chronic back, neck, or shoulder pain due to overly large breasts, you might be considering Reduction Mammoplasty (Breast Reduction) in Melbourne. This surgical procedure removes excess breast tissue and skin to alleviate discomfort and improve body proportions. Our experienced plastic surgeons provide personalised care to ensure you achieve the best possible outcomes.

What is Reduction Mammoplasty?

Reduction Mammoplasty, commonly known as breast reduction surgery, is a surgical procedure aimed at removing excess breast tissue and skin to achieve a breast size in proportion with the body. This procedure is often sought by individuals experiencing physical discomfort or health issues due to overly large breasts.

What are the Benefits of Reduction Mammoplasty?

Heavy breasts can lead to debilitating problems such as neck and back pain, posture problems and skin rashes in summer. It can also interfere with everyday life, particularly with sporting activities or clothes fitting. Reduction Mammoplasty (Breast Reduction Surgery) is an operation that aims to:
  • Reduce the size and weight of the breasts
  • Reduce or improve the size and appearance of the nipple and areola
  • Improve the overall appearance of the breasts
Other significant benefits may include:
  • Relief from physical discomfort such as back, neck, and shoulder pain
  • Improved posture due to reduced breast weight
  • Increased ability to participate in physical activities without restriction
  • Reduction in skin irritation and rashes under the breasts
  • Better fitting clothes and bras

Am I a Good Candidate for a Reduction Mammoplasty?

Determining if you are a good candidate for breast reduction surgery involves assessing various factors. Generally, individuals experiencing significant physical discomfort, restricted activities, or self-consciousness due to overly large breasts are ideal candidates. Consultation with an experienced plastic surgeon like Dr Lin is crucial to evaluate your specific situation and ensure you are fit to undergo breast reduction procedures.

Are There any Risks or Side Effects?

While Reduction Mammoplasty can provide significant relief and benefits, it is essential to be aware of the potential risks and side effects of this cosmetic surgery:
  • Breast reduction scars that may vary in appearance
  • Changes in nipple or breast sensation, which can be temporary or permanent
  • Difficulty breastfeeding post-surgery
  • Possible asymmetry between the breasts
  • Complications related to anaesthesia
  • Infection or poor wound healing
Discussing these risks with your surgeon is essential before deciding to undergo a Reduction Mammoplasty. See here for more information about Risks and Complications of Cosmetic Surgery.

Reduction Mammoplasty (Breast Reduction) with Eastern Plastic Surgery

Consultation

During your consultation, Dr Lin will discuss with you what must be considered before undergoing Reduction Mammoplasty, including:

  • The size of the breasts
  • What is involved in the surgery
  • The likely recovery process
  • The potential problems with the surgery

Reduction Mammoplasty Procedure

Reduction Mammoplasty (Breast Reduction Surgery) is performed under general anaesthesia and the operation time is typically 2-3 hours.
  • During the operation, your safety is our main priority. In this regard, Mr Lin strictly adheres to the highest standards in surgical safety, which includes the use of antibiotics to prevent infection, and compression stockings/blood thinning medications to prevent clots (DVTs).
  • Sometimes, drain tubes may be used which are generally removed the following day.
  • At the end of the operation, you will be cared for in the post anaesthetic recovery area before being transferred to a specialist surgical ward.

Recovery

Generally, we would recommend 1-2 nights in hospital for your comfort and safety. We recommend a supportive garment, such as a crop top, for both comfort and support. Most patients should plan for 2-3 weeks off work and 4-6 weeks of avoiding contact sports or heavy lifting.

Dr Lin will see you within one week of discharge to check on your recovery and the wound healing. Following this, a regular schedule of post-operative consultations will be provided by Dr Lin and his staff.

FAQs

If you have any more questions about Reduction Mammoplasty (Breast Reduction) in Melbourne, please don’t hesitate to contact us. In the meantime, you can find FAQs below that may provide the additional information you’re looking for.
What’s the difference between a traditional and short scar breast reduction?

The choice of surgical technique depends on factors such as existing breast volume, cup size, nipple position, and desired breast size and shape. The traditional breast reduction technique leaves a circular scar around the nipple and areola, a vertical scar down to a horizontal scar in the breast fold, forming an "anchor" shape. In contrast, the "short scar" or "vertical" breast reduction eliminates or reduces the horizontal scar. However, not everyone is suitable for this technique, as it may affect the breast contour immediately after surgery.
Am I suitable for ‘short scar’ breast reduction?

Suitability for the short scar technique depends on individual anatomy and goals. Patients seeking moderate size reduction are often suitable, while those needing significant volume reduction or with excess skin may require traditional techniques. The short scar method may leave minor skin redundancy along the vertical scar, but this typically settles within a few months. Dr Lin will provide a thorough consultation to assess suitability and set realistic expectations, usually over one or two sessions to ensure all questions are addressed.
How do I care for the surgical scars following breast reduction surgery?

Scar management is an integral part of the recovery process following any surgery. Physical therapy is the first, and arguably the most important, step in helping scars mature and fade. As a part of our commitment to the highest quality surgery and after-care, we provide a specialist scar management consultation with our in-house dermal therapist, who will recommend a treatment regimen that is tailored to your individual skin type.
Is a breast reduction procedure covered by Medicare Australia?

Breast reduction surgery can be covered by Medicare Australia if it is deemed medically necessary. This typically involves situations where the patient experiences physical discomfort or other health issues due to excess breast tissue. A referral from a GP and an assessment by a qualified specialist plastic surgeon are usually required to determine eligibility for coverage.
What is the minimum size to get a breast reduction?

There is no specific minimum size requirement for breast reduction surgery. The decision is based on the level of physical discomfort and the impact of overly large breasts on the individual's quality of life. An experienced plastic surgeon will evaluate your condition and determine if you are a suitable candidate for breast reduction.
What is the ideal weight for breast reduction surgery?

There is no strict ideal weight for undergoing breast reduction surgery. However, maintaining a stable and healthy weight can contribute to better surgical outcomes. Patients are generally advised to be within a normal weight range for their height to minimise surgical risks and enhance recovery. Consulting with a qualified specialist plastic surgeon like Dr Lin will help determine the best approach for your specific situation.
How long does recovery from breast reduction surgery take?

Recovery time from breast reduction surgery varies depending on the individual's health, the extent of the procedure, and adherence to post-operative care instructions. Typically, patients can return to normal activities within a few weeks, but full recovery and final results may take several months.
Any surgical or invasive procedure carries risks. Before proceeding, you should seek the opinion of an appropriately qualified health practitioner.
