- GYNAECOMASTIA
Enlarged male breast tissue can affect chest contour and may not always improve with exercise or lifestyle changes. Gynaecomastia surgery (also known as male breast reduction) offers a structured surgical approach to reducing excess glandular tissue and achieving a flatter, more balanced chest shape.
At Eastern Plastic Surgery, gynaecomastia surgery in Melbourne is tailored to address the underlying cause of breast enlargement, whether it involves glandular tissue, localised fat, or a combination of both.
What Is Gynaecomastia Surgery?
Gynaecomastia surgery is a procedure designed to remove excess glandular breast tissue, reduce fatty deposits and refine the chest profile. It is performed to correct long-standing enlargement that has not improved through weight management or medical assessment. The procedure can address one or both sides, depending on each individual’s presentation.
What Concerns Can Gynaecomastia Surgery Address?
Gynaecomastia correction can assist with a range of concerns, including:
- Excess glandular breast tissue
- Localised fat on the chest
- Puffy or protruding nipples
- Uneven breast size or shape
- Persistent enlargement that has not responded to lifestyle changes

What Are the Benefits of Gynaecomastia Surgery?
Male breast reduction in Melbourne may offer several structural and physical improvements:
- Flatter chest contour and reduced prominence
- Removal of excess glandular tissue
- Ability to treat both gland and fat in the same procedure
- More balanced chest proportions
- Lasting results when weight remains stable
Am I a Suitable Candidate for Gynaecomastia Surgery?
Individuals with long-term breast enlargement, discomfort caused by excess tissue, or early signs of glandular overgrowth may benefit from gynaecomastia surgery in Melbourne. It is particularly suitable for those who have not seen improvement through diet, exercise, or medical evaluation. A consultation is required to determine whether the enlargement is due to glandular tissue, fat, or a combination, as this influences the surgical approach.
How Is Gynaecomastia Surgery Performed?
The technique used depends on the composition of the breast tissue. In most cases, the procedure involves removing glandular tissue through a small incision at the edge of the areola, combined with liposuction to contour surrounding areas if required.
This dual approach allows the surgeon to refine the chest shape and achieve a smoother, more even result. Where excess skin is present, additional techniques may be used to tighten and reshape the area. All decisions are made based on the individual’s anatomy and goals.

Consultation
During an initial consultation, your chest contour, tissue composition and overall goals are assessed. This includes determining whether the breast enlargement is glandular, fatty, or mixed. The consultation guides the surgical plan and ensures a clear understanding of expected outcomes, recovery and any potential limitations.
Procedure
The procedure is performed using techniques selected for your specific presentation. Glandular tissue is removed directly, while liposuction may be incorporated to improve definition across the chest wall. Surgery length varies depending on the extent of correction, and every step is designed to reshape the chest in a controlled and predictable manner.
Results
Initial flattening is visible soon after surgery, with further refinement occurring as swelling decreases. The chest shape continues to settle over the following months as tissues heal. Final results reflect the reduction of glandular tissue and improved chest contour.
Recovery
Recovery times vary, but most individuals return to light daily activities within a few days. A compression garment is typically worn to support the area and help with swelling. More strenuous activities are introduced gradually based on clinical guidance. Temporary swelling, bruising, or reduced sensation can occur and generally improve during the healing process.
Potential Risks or Side Effects
All surgical procedures carry potential risks. With gynaecomastia surgery, these may include:
- Bruising or swelling
- Temporary numbness
- Mild discomfort
- Contour irregularities
- Scarring at incision sites
During your consultation, we will go through each of these risks in detail and explain how they apply to your circumstances, ensuring you feel fully informed before deciding on surgery.
How Much Does Gynaecomastia Surgery Cost in Melbourne?
The cost of gynaecomastia surgery in Melbourne depends on factors such as the amount of tissue to be removed, whether liposuction is required and the complexity of the procedure. A detailed, personalised cost outline is provided after your assessment.

Most people resume light daily activities within several days, while swelling and firmness continue to settle over the following weeks. Full recovery varies and your surgeon will guide you on when to return to exercise and other activities.
The removal of glandular tissue is generally long-lasting, although maintaining a stable weight helps preserve results. Hormonal changes or certain medications may influence future breast tissue development.
Recurrence is uncommon, but factors such as weight gain, hormonal fluctuations, or specific medical conditions can contribute to new breast enlargement. Your consultation will explore any elements that may increase this risk.
All surgical procedures involve incisions, and gynaecomastia surgery typically places these around the areola or within the natural contours of the chest. Scars usually soften over time and their appearance varies from person to person.
Gynaecomastia involves excess glandular tissue, while chest fat is related to general body composition. A consultation helps determine the underlying cause so the appropriate treatment plan can be recommended.
