The appearance of eyebags, dark circles and tear trough represent some of the most common reasons patients attend their plastic surgeon. These features can cause a permanently tired, unwell or stressed expression, as well as dull the overall appearance of the face. While ages certainly plays a role, there are a number of other factors which contribute to their formation.
What causes dark circles and eye bags to form?
The appearance of eyebags, dark circles and tear trough occur due to many different factors, so there is usually not one single solution that works for everyone.
Some of these factors include:
- Age: As we age our muscles weaken and we begin to lose collagen (volume) in the dermal part of the skin. Loose skin and weakness in the internal membranes around our eyes accentuate eyebags, and make dark circles appear more obvious.
- Hyperpigmentation: In darker skin types, it is common for more melanin to be produced around the eyes.
- Heredity: Deep-set eyes and very thin skin around the eyes can be a genetic trait.
- Allergies (rubbing the eyes due to itching): Rubbing the eye area can damage blood capillaries and enhance the darkness of the skin.
In this regard, no two patients are exactly alike, and the emphasis is on an individual assessment of each patient’s anatomy and expectations to formulate the most suitable treatment plan.
Can tear trough and eye bags be improved?
In some cases, due to the severity of the problem or the age of the patient, the best treatment may be surgery to address the eyebags and sagging skin.
However, it is often possible to improve these problems without surgery. Non-invasive treatment such as Dermal Fillers, Skin Boosters and resurfacing can often improve the appearance of tear trough and eyebags, without needing surgery.
Dermal fillers are an effective option for adding volume and rejuvenating the face. They can be administered directly into the tear trough area to lift and smooth the appearance under the eyes.
To get the best results, this may need to be combined with other treatments.
At EST Clinic we use a variety of soft tissue fillers from world’s leading manufacturers such as Allergan and Mondeal. In general, the fillers used around the eyes are softer than those used on other parts of the face, the give the most natural and long lasting result. These can be enhanced with skin booster products which are often infused with a combination of amino acids, vitamins, minerals and antioxidants that serve to rejuvenate the skin, brighten the eye area and increase comfort levels during treatment.
How is the treatment performed?
The filler is administered into the area through a cannula, which is a small, thin tube. Using a cannula rather than a needle will minimize the chance of bruising or damaging the delicate structures around the eye. The filler formulation has a high viscoelasticity which allows for greater ease of injection and more natural-looking results. The procedure will usually be completed in under 30 minutes.
For your safety and to obtain the best results, it is important to ensure that your practitioner is highly experienced in both assessing and administering dermal fillers.
Is the treatment painful?
Most patients find the procedure to be relatively painless. Teosyal Redensity II contains a numbing solution called lidocaine, and our cosmetic nurses will also apply a numbing cream to the area to make the procedure more comfortable. Patients may experience slight swelling after the treatment which should go down after a few hours.
