Enhance Your Features with Chin Augmentation

    COSMETIC SURGERY | 28 JAN 2021

    Chin augmentation

Chin enhancement corrects the proportions of the face by adjusting the size, projection, shape and length of the chin. A small or weak chin can accentuate the size of the nose and make the neck appear fleshy. Projecting the recessed chin improves the sharpness of the jawline and aligns the edge of the chin with the nasal bridge. When the nose and chin complement each other in this way, a more balanced facial appearance is achieved.

If you feel as though your chin is not aesthetically proportioned in relation to the rest of your face, chin enhancement can create a more harmonious facial structure. At Eastern Plastic Surgery, we offer dermal filler enhancements as well as chin implants to improve the appearance of the chin. The method used will depend on your preference, expectations and features, and Dr Frank Lin can help you to determine which would work best for you.

    Non-Surgical Chin Augmentation

WHAT ARE DERMAL FILLERS FOR CHIN MADE FROM?
At Eastern Plastic Surgery we utilise a range of macromolecular dermal fillers for the chin. These are substances that occur naturally in the body, adding volume to the skin and helping it to retain moisture. A reformulation of the substance is popularly used in dermal fillers today to plump up facial skin that is lacking in volume. For non-surgical chin augmentation, these are placed into the chin area using a very small cannula. This method allows for micro-adjustments to be made to the shape of the chin during the procedure.

ARE DERMAL FILLERS FOR CHIN SAFE?
Dermal fillers are in general a very safe treatment, especially with modern cannula techniques making it even safer than traditional sharp needle techniques. As with other non-surgical treatments, non-surgical chin augmentation using dermal filler can be quickly and comfortably performed in our Eastern Plastic Surgery treatment rooms.

ARE DERMAL FILLERS FOR CHIN PERMANENT?
Dr Lin generally recommends and uses non-permanent fillers, which will last between 6-12 months. Non-permanent fillers will break down and re-absorb into the body naturally, which means that initial results will fade and touch-ups will be necessary to maintain results. As the body ages it undergoes changes – around the face, muscles will relax, fat will shift and skin will lose elasticity. A permanent filler may not evolve naturally with these changes, and so non-permanent fillers are recommended.
ARE DERMAL FILLERS FOR CHIN PAINFUL?
The procedure is performed under local anaesthetic. Patients will experience some discomfort for a very brief time with the local anaesthetic, but will have very little discomfort during the procedure itself. In addition, local anaesthetic cream or ice can be used beforehand to numb the area.

WHAT IS THE EXPECTED RECOVERY TIME FOR CHIN FILLERS?
Using cannula technique is not only safer than traditional sharp needle, the vast majority of patients do not report pain after treatment and rarely notice any bruising. Rarely, there may be some sensation of soreness or redness, which should wear away in a few hours.

WHAT ARE CHIN IMPLANTS MADE FROM?
At Eastern Plastic Surgery, we offer silicone implants and Gore-Tex implants for chin augmentation surgery. Silicone implants are used commonly around the world, and have a rubber-like consistency making them smooth and solid. When inserted into the implant pocket, these implants do not become attached to the surrounding chin tissue and so the procedure can be easily reversed. Gore-Tex implants are porous and allow tissue growth between the pores, securing the implant in place and conforming it to the body. These implants are more difficult to remove.

As well as the type of implant, the size and shape of chin implants can be customised to each individual.

    IS CHIN IMPLANT SURGERY SAFE?
Chin implant surgery is a safe and frequently performed operation around the world. However, like all cosmetic surgery, complications can still occur even though they are rare. It is therefore important that it is only performed by a fully qualified specialist plastic surgeon such as Dr Lin, who is trained to recognize and manage these problems if they do occur. Complications may include infection, scarring of soft tissue and the body’s reaction to the implant itself. Although rare, these issues are carefully discussed during a pre-surgery consultation with Dr Lin.
    IS CHIN IMPLANT SURGERY PERMANENT?
Chin implant surgery is designed as a permanent procedure. It is important, however, that all patients are followed up in the long term as with all implant surgery.
CAN CHIN IMPLANTS LEAK OR MOVE?
Chin implants are comprised of firm, solid substances (silicone or Gore-Tex), so they do not leak. There is extremely little chance that the implant will move from its position. A capsule will typically form around and immobilise a silicone implant, helping to maintain its position. A Gore-Tex implant will conform to its position through tissue growth between its pores.
    IS CHIN IMPLANT SURGERY PAINFUL?
It is common for patients to experience some discomfort after any surgical procedure – this is dependent on the individual, and can be managed with pain medication.
WHAT IS THE RECOVERY TIME FOR CHIN IMPLANT SURGERY?
Chin implant surgery has a relatively short recovery time. After the surgery, patients may experience slight bruising around the chin for a few days and some discomfort. Patients are expected to return to their regular activities after around 1-2 weeks following surgery. It is important to discuss individual circumstances and recovery timeframes with your surgeon.

ANY SURGICAL OR INVASIVE PROCEDURE CARRIES RISKS. BEFORE PROCEEDING, YOU SHOULD SEEK A SECOND OPINION FROM AN APPROPRIATELY QUALIFIED HEALTH PRACTITIONER.
