Ultherapy: Lift and Tighten Your Skin Without Surgery

As we age, our skin inevitably begins to relax and lose its firmness. Along with the natural pull of gravity, sagging facial skin and wrinkles are the result of many factors such as heredity, personal habits and sun exposure.

To restore volume in the skin and create a youthful, rejuvenated appearance, facelifts have become a very popular anti-ageing procedure. But for those who wish to address their facial ageing concerns without resorting to surgery, a safe and effective alternative is Ultherapy.

Ultherapy is a non-invasive procedure that utilises ultrasound technology to tone and tighten the facial, neck and decolletage areas. The focused ultrasound energy stimulates the body’s natural regenerative responses to build new collagen, gently and gradually lifting and smoothing the skin. The procedure is effective not only only on the face, but also the decolletage – one of the first areas of the body to show signs of age, and one of the hardest to treat.

Ultrasound technology has been safely used in the medical field for over 50 years, and Ultherapy is the only FDA-cleared non-surgical “facelift” procedure.

How does Ultherapy work?

The Ultherapy device uses ultrasound energy to bypass the surface of the skin and stimulate the structural support layers that exist deeper below. While other aesthetic technologies such as laser treatment “push” energy into the skin from the outside, Ultherapy is unique in the way it focuses the ultrasound energy to an optimised point beneath the skin’s surface and delivers the energy at an optimised temperature. At this focused point, the energy heats the tissue, triggering a natural regenerative response (called neocollagenesis) that produces fresh collagen in the skin.

At Eastern Plastic Surgery, the Ultherapy process begins with an initial consultation with one of our skincare professionals, during which your skin will be assessed and your suitability as an Ultherapy candidate will be determined. During the treatment itself, the skin is first cleansed and the specific areas to be treated will be identified by your skin therapist. Ultrasound gel is then applied to these areas, and the treatment applicator placed against the skin. Your skin professional will use the Ultherapy device to determine the optimal placement beneath the skin’s surface to focus and deliver the ultrasound energy. Comfort levels  vary from patient to patient; you will feel the sensation of the energy being delivered into your skin.

The length of the procedure will depend on your own individual treatment plan and the area being treated.

What are the benefits of Ultherapy?

While the Ultherapy treatment does not directly replicate the results of a traditional surgical facelift, it is an effective, low-risk clinical alternative for those who are not yet ready for surgery and desire a natural result. Ultherapy can be performed on all skin types and does not have any risk of hyperpigmentation, making it a popular treatment among clients with skin that is prone to hyperpigmentation (such as Asian skin).

Some patients are able to see the effects of the treatment immediately. However, most results unfold over 2-3 months post-procedure as gradual tightening occurs due to new collagen development.

What can I expect after the procedure?

There are no post-treatment requirements for Ultherapy patients. Ultherapy is a no-downtime procedure, and regular activities can be resumed immediately after treatment. While the skin may experience some redness afterwards, this should disappear within a few hours. Some patients may also experience temporary swelling or tenderness, but these effects are uncommon. Your skin therapist will review potential side effects with you at your consultation.

Usually patients only require one treatment to see results, but some benefit from additional treatments and “touch ups” as the skin continues to age.
